I was talking the other day with a friend who works in a team which handles constant structural reorganisation within a large bank. He knew of no plans to look at using social networking. It's a large and extremely hierarchical enterprise, where the flow of information is strictly controlled for internal political reasons. He thought the only way the top level would consider allowing the use of such tools (which currently are all under a blanket ban) would be if everyone's contacts were strictly controlled, reflecting work groups etc. Which of course removes all the benefits of self-organisation.

It seems to me important to convince directors to exchange some power of control for the power to change. This is what self-organisation brings to a network. Adaptability is essential for survival, even for a large company, or indeed for a department. If this is not emphasised then perhaps the benefits of Web 2.0 to the organisation may be lost on discussion participants?
