Mapping the 400+ ICT4D Twitter members

Aug / 25 / 2009

Inspired by a post on ICTWorks, I have compiled a comprehensive list of 400 ICT4D twitter members. Almost a year ago, I started a second Twitter account for news around ICT4D. I had previously offered the ICT4D feed (subscribe) for a while and publish the best pieces of that feed on Twitter. Although the feed has around 30 resources each day, it also attracted already some 50 subscribers.

A year ago, only a few people were twittering around ICT4D topics, but nowadays, a year later, Twitter has developed into so many niche topics and brought so many people together interested in ICT4D. Twitter offers new ways to find synergies and the people who are part of it might not otherwise get to know so much about their topics. More importantly, it becomes a fascinating community tool, which helps spread ideas around ICT4D and lessons learnt – something that is much needed. I have uploaded a list of 400 users in a Google Spreadsheet, and I am still sure I have most probably missed some people.

Therefore, if this is your case, please feel free to add yourself in the open spreadsheet or add users in the comment area. I have also included the location information from each account, so most users are represented in a map. It is already looking nicely populated. What do you think?

Update: Please be patient to see the map. It can take longer. (sorry!) Thought that Google map gadget works well quicker. Click here for larger map.

Update 2: The map shows only one marker per city, so be sure to check the table below for the full list.
Download the list as an Excel file (26/08/09) or export yourself the latest version in Google spreadsheets.

By the way, it is quite nice what you can do with Google Docs these days. Every table with geographic information can be transformed in such a map. I wrote about it in another post on the web2fordev gateway. You may want to follow web2fordev also on Twitter.

This is an incredible list and a great effort – thanks for putting this out there and sharing. At first glance of the table I didn’t see too many universities participating. If that is the impression, maybe not many departments have a twitter account (schools of information management, CS ICT specific departments). On the global/public health side, departments are starting to sign on and reach out. Maybe this could also be a call for educational institutions to get involved and a way to get their students online and more info as well.

Thanks!

Great job Christian!

I love that our forum topic has evolved into a Google Map, but is there a way to edit locations? You have a few people placed in the wrong country, like Kenyans in Nigeria, San Franciscans in Senegal.

Christian Kreutz August 26, 2009 at 4:29 pm

Hi Wayan,
yes indeed we could make that much better. See it as a draft. Maybe we can make it together better? So at the moment it works like the following:
I took all the Twitter user in a list and there location information form their profile.
First problem: Some users have many different locations and it seems there are only displayed once (last location in a list).
Second problem: The Google map only offers one marker per city, which is a known problem. So for example Washington has many users, but only one listed in the map. But you can change the location in the table.

Alternative:
It seems that the Google Spreadsheet is not a great option to make edits. I got feedback that it did not work always. So maybe we put it into a wiki and limit the location to one place. But then we still have the marker problem. I will think about it further. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi christian, thanks for this fantastic effort! a quick practical question – did you manually add all the twitter users to the google spreadsheet, copying names and locations? or did you find a way to automate this somehow?

Best! saskia

Christian Kreutz August 31, 2009 at 1:15 pm

Hi Saskia,
these are the people I follow from my ICT4D Twitter account. I exported the members through http://tweetake.com/ (export CSV) and manually edited location information from the Twitter profiles.
Best Christian
